In keeping with the theme of the Mediterranean Diet from our previous couple posts, today we're highlighting the benefits of olive oil! Olive oil
has often been regarding as the cornerstone of the Mediterranean Diet, and has some pretty amazing health qualities. Obviously you don't want to overdo it with any fats or oils, but olive oil has a lot to offer, adn is a great alternative to butter. So here are a few reasons why you may want to drizzle a little oil over tonight's dish!
- Olive oil has many anti-inflammatory benefits - oleocanthal, an antioxidant found in olive oil, is said to have properties comparable to ibuprofen. Also, oleic acid, a principle fatty acid found in olive oil, has been found to reduce levels of inflammatory markers.
- Great for cardiovascualr health - Olive oil has been linked to fighting heart disease! In addition to lowering inflammation, it can lower blood pressure, protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, and improve the function of the lining of blood vessels.
- It has anti-bacterial properties - This is always an amazing quality to have in food, and it is also a property of coconut oil (another great substitution for butter). Olive oil has proven effective against Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that lives in the stomach and can lead to ulcers and stomach cancer.
- It's a great source of healthy fat! About 3/4 of olive oil is composed of the healthy monounsaturated fat, oleic acid.
